AE92 buring oil

ok so i got new tires today and an oil change. come to find out that i only had 2.5 quarts in the car but when i got it it showed 4 so im buring oil. i smell it when i shift at 4 grand. so now i have mobil oil and a k&n filter.so i look under the car and i knew it had oil on the ac compressor and around that area but i just thought that was from before. i guess imma wipe it all down clean then drive around and look where its comeing from. but first thing that came to mind was the oil cooler. but has anyone had problems with the pan gasket? or anything else.........???

mine used to leak, but for some odd reason stopped.
4 quarts sounds like alot. 3 liters in my car and it's hit the full line, than again 4af... 4age might be different. But alot of japanese cars only take 3 liters. 4 quarts is 3.7 liters... your looking for around 3.1 quarts
Burning it? well it's not overly unusual for a car that old. dont rev so high? I also found that the car burned the mobile 1 and only does it with convential oil near the end of the oil change.

I've already got my oil cooler lines fixed once on the 89 GTS, now the damn hoses are starting to leak again, I guess you can say the hoses are a common failure in oil coolers.

did you use 20-50 weight? i think its to heavy for the car so i used 10-40. well your right the 4age engine takes 3.7. so thats why the 4. a car can be old and not burn oil. if its taken care of. i usally shift 3.5 to 4 ill stick to 3.5 i guess she just seems like she likes around 4. its mobil clean 5k wich means it isnt synthetic. just reg oil. in a car with 205k in it i wouldnt put synthetic. then id really have an oil leak problem! yea plus i didnt know when was the last time it had a change so now i know. its good for 3k. ill wipe everything down and then see where its comeing from.

I know they can, but it's not abnormal for an old car to do that.

Should be 3.8 with a filter replaced.

In my experiance I have started using just 1qt of Syntec 5W-50 and then the rest is plain 30W. But I do this because of the heat in Texas. I have found that on an older car it will leak for the first 1 or 2 oil changes and then it will stop because the gaskets seem to absord some of the snythetic oil. Don't laugh, I had a 1984 Honda Accord up to 267k, a Mazda B2000 truck up to 304k, and a 1990 Accord up to 265k with no major motor problems. Although the truck was leaking really bad at the rear main before I let it go( clutch, starter and 3rd gear syncro were also dead), but it ran great. On the down side my 1994 Ford F150 had to have the oil pan gasket replaced at 180k, but it has 208k on it now with no new problems.

Good luck.

For one: The 4A's didnt have a pan gasket - or at least the 3rd Gen FE's and GE's didn't. The Second Gen may do. But there are a few common places that i have found i lost oil on in my FE.

1. Oil Cooler lines, and oil cooler itself when it cracked.
2. The Gasket Glue from the pan (This is hard to pick up because the pan is black).
3. The washer on the drain bolt - this can corrode or get dirty and you got leakage, big because its gravity fed.
4. The rocker cover gasket. Because this is a rubber gasket, it will degrade over time.
5. The oil is too thin or you just changed brands. But this sounds like it is not the problem...
