Question '94 Prizm eats oil

My dad has a '94 Prizm TSi with the 4A-FE engine, and it eats oil like crazy. He says it smokes when he goes heavy on the gas, and he always carries a box of oil in his trunk so he won't run out. I was told in the Celica forum that my '92 celica smoking a little on start up could be caused by an old Exhaust Valve seal. Is it possible that this is the same problem afflicting the Prizm?

Thanks

I suggest doing a compression test to rule out a major engine problem. If the compression is OK then look for the little stuff.

7A-FE's are notorious for bad piston rings... 4A's can have similar problems but usually go quite a bit longer 200k + before problems...

I have the SAME problem in my 98 corolla le, i bought a used engine from a 99 prizm.
I believe its just a head gasket. replace that and your problem MIGHT be solved.

98-99's although less common are also known for bad piston rings
