macpherson strut should only need the 3 nuts on the top, 2 bolts at the bottom disconnect the brake line from the strut and remove. as for taking the spring out. DO NOT do it without a spring compressor as it's under load so removing that nut at the top will probably end up with you hurt. If you don't want to mess with it a shop can do it for you. Then put back in the way you got them out

it comes out as an assembly.

I thought you need an impact gun to take the nut on the struts off.

Nope, springs can be changed with only basic tools, a spanner set and a socket set (+ a jack and axel stands). Thats all I used to change all of the sets I have (done 5 so far).

Also suspension clamps are a good idea but it can be done with out them, I've only used them once.

Also if you can its easier to loosen the top nut when the strut is still in the car, as its held in place.

Autozone is your friend
autozone.com

they will lend them to you (you actually pay with your credit card, but they return the money when you return the tools). They also have instructions on their website for auto repair. You can also print those pages.

I have done the struts on my Corolla

thanks for the help guys.. i had a closer look at the springs today, and they really dont look like they are going to fit anyway. the stock springs have a really wide diameter, but the ones i was looking at putting in, have a really thin diameter. Does this make a difference? I assume it does. If it is any help, i got them from a friend who had them on a 89 honda prelude.

thanks

Springs are made for specific models, you can't swap them around. So no prelude springs won't fit a corolla
