'01 Corolla - oil

Hey Folks,

I have an '01 Corolla with 94k km on it. All previous oil changes have been at the stealership (factory warranty expired in March), however, I want to start changing my own oil.

I drive the hell out of my car (put 54k km on the car in less than 2 yrs, and for that reason I've decided to go synthetic; doing a synthetic change myself will cost around the same as a dealer change using conventional oil (when the synthetic is purchased on sale). That said, I have two questions;

1) How much oil should be added to the engine when it's empty? Large bottles of oil in Canada are sold in 4.4 litre sizes, and I'm failry certain that the engine doesn't require 4.4 litres.

2) Does anyone know if Mobile 1 is worth the additional markup compared to other Synthetic oils (ie: Castrol, Q, Penzoil) ?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers.

1) It is somwhere in the 3's in litres. Not exactly sure.

2) Mobil1 is deff worth it. For the lowest prices, go to walmart. I got a big 5 quart for $21. Also use Toyota OEM filters and not the garbage Fram filters.

My manual says 3.4 litres drain and fill. So what I do is take a jug, fill a 1 litre bottle, put that away, and use what remains for your oil change. Check your dipstick and top off as needed. When you have enough of those litre bottles of Mobil 1 around, use 3 and a half bottles. There are markings on the side of M1 litre bottles, which helps.

I also like to use the taller Toyota YZZF1 filter. More filter element, more capacity.

Yes I do use Mobil 1 too.

What I like to do is take those big bottle and pour a little down while the drain is open to clear up any old oil that might have gotten stuck there. Then proceed to fill it up. In litres he said its a 4.4 litre bottle and car needs 3.4 litre. 1 extra litre there. Sure you can save it up but I dont have room to keep that big of a bottle but I still hang on to it just in case. I still pour quite a bit down just to clear up anything even though there shouldnt be much with synthetic. Deff do that if using conventional oil.
