86 Corolla 3-speed automatic leaks above pan

I have a 1986 with the A131L automatic, which suddenly started leaking about a tablespoon a day, and the leak doesn't seem to be from the pan but higher up. I'm having trouble pinpointing the leak because the fluid is spread all over. Shifting feels just as it always has.

Where is the likely source of the leak?

One thought is that the fluid is from where the axles go into the differential.

Degrease the engine from about half-way up to the pan. Go for a drive then see where its coming from... Should be able to pinpoint it better from there...

Chances are its the valve cover seals, 20yr old seals are probably ready to replace.

Is that the transmission pan gasket? Because it does cover the valve body, and the leak is definitely red Dexron and not engine oil. Worse...

...I discovered that the leak isn't from the differential but is probably the transmission input shaft seal. Is there a relatively easy way to separate the engine from the transmission?
