Yeah, maybe when you bought a new car ten years ago...
My parents live in Maine which is easily as shitty in Winter as southern Canada, salt on the roads and all, they have 150,000+ miles on their 1999 Volvo (yes all those miles in 4 years), they have never done after-market rust proofing and their body is mint.
Their 1986 Dodge Ram-Charger however was mint when they bought it used in the mid-nineties, but now the quarter panels are rusted to sh1t...
New cars are rust proofed at the factory and most have a body rust waranty wich is life time, like the power train waranty, not 36,000miles/3 years like the full waranty.
