The corolla engines have always been loud. I got my car with 4000 miles on it and it was loud. Sooner or later you will even hear a valve tapping noise.
You can try running some Seafoam thru the engine. It's $7 at AutoZone, so if it doesnt change anything its not a costly loss. The engine may have carbon buildup from all the city driving. It worked wonders in my 94 Corolla, and when combined with some Denso Iridium plugs, it is incredibly smooth, wheras it used to be quite harsh, especially at lower speeds.

Wont work, once the engine is broken in its broken in. Then again, modern cars already have so close tolerances, that there really isnt any break in necessary.
What really the whole break in process is running the enigne so that the piston rings seal with the cylinder walls.
Only way to really re-break in the car is to put new pistonrings and hone the block.
On another note, you say if warranty will fix it, doubt so, a "loud" engine isnt a mechanical condition. and the whine can be from the automatic transmission, if it is auto.
I would take it to a seperate mechanic and have them listen to it but I'll bet it's just injector noise. My 06 has that type of noise and they it's nothing to worry about.

my 12 yr old 7afe has that valve tapping noise, i've always thought this was normal, and you guys are saying its not? anyways, the 1st thing i would do is reset the ecu
It is normal on the newer corollas with the 1zz-fe engines. It has been discussed before on corolla specific boards before and its normal. Nothing to worry about.
^^ I actually must say i agree with that. You break it in by driving it as hard as you would when your thrashing it and the engine will last a whole lot longer if you decide to thrash it later in life...
But it may not help your situation now...

if you say when you floor it it sounds like someone is gargling???? That sounds like a engine with a CAI on it, or you may have a leak in the air intake portion, what most people try to do to get more power out of these rollas is they remove the snorkel thinking that may give them some more power, but all it does it give the sound out you are describing, look under the hood and see if the snorkel hasnt been removed by any chance....

couldn't it just be the ecu? I don't have alot of knowlege on the toyotas but I figure if fords do this toyotas would to. With it learning by each driver how to run the engine to best suit the driver.
