What do I look for when trying to determine if the cv shafts are bad? Thanks.

A failing half shaft joint will often make a clicking noise when turning. The bad joint is usually on the opposite side of the direction of the turn. The joint can also make a clunk when the transmission is engaged. Cause vibration when driven at higher speeds. Most often it is the clicking noise that provides the most notable clue.

CV's will Clunk generally when turning.

Visual inspections generally are any cracking or taring in the boot, as well as the loss of the boot entirely (I have seen this once ) or a loose boot causing loss of grease

Mine didn't click but you could grab the shaft and move it around.

Drive the car on some ramps, crawl under the car, and twist the cv shaft. If there is a bunch of slack then you have a bad cv-shaft.
