So I have this friend. My obsession with vehicular performance was starting to have an effect on him, and he soon found himself constantly playing GT4 on his PS2. Me being the coniving person I am figured he may want to someday experience the "go-fast" thrill in real life. So I've planted the seed with him that making one's car fast isn't always an expensive endeavor.
First I started looking for something cheap for him, like a TSI/GS-T, or old model RX-7 (budget of less than 5k).
Then I started looking at his current car as a potential sleeper, a 92 Corolla (which if I gather correctly, is an AE92). I haven't had any experience with 'yotas, but certainly appreciate the potential (especially when I found that it weighs a scant 2200 lbs).
At a little over 100 hp, I would think an engine swap would be a smart move. What are the options? I've heard a little about the 4AGEZ, and just want a little info...difficulty of swap, hp numbers, where one can find an engine to purchase, feasibility of FI, etc.
Edit: Few things to add, this is a sedan, and though I did find the big post "The Master Sticky of Corolla Info", a lot of the links didn't work, and just took me back to the main toyotanation page.
The 4AGZE came in AW11 (88-89) Mr2's in the states. Pretty rare I figure, since I have never seen a supercharged model in person. They can also be had from http://www.toysport.com
from JDM AE92's (Levin/Tureno I'm sure someone here will correct me). They do bolt up to the exsisting mounts, but have heard wiring is not so simple. Also, it is supercharged from the factory, with forged rods and pistons. They also have a top mount intercooler, which will require a hood with a scoop, or a FMIC setup. In difficulty, I've never done one, so all I can do is compare it to another swap, an SR20DET in a 240SX, since it is basically a stock motor for the car, from another country. Your N/A setup options are a 4AGE, which can be had from an 88-92 Corolla GTS (2 Door Coupe) or an 88-92 Geo Prizm GSi (which is a sedan). The other N/A option is the 20 valve version with VVT (variable valve timing) and individual throttle bodies. These come in silver and black top versions from AE101/AE111 Corolla's, the silver top has the same internal's as the GZE minus the pistons, the blacktop's internals being much lighter and weaker, but it is still an option for some because of the 6 Speed transmission. The GZE is rated at 160HP from the factory, the silvertop being rated the same, and the blacktop being rated at 170HP ( I believe). Just make sure you get a full clip when ordering an engine. I'm sure there will be more info/corrections coming shortly.
Just a couple, other than that you are spot on. The 4AGZE in Corollas from Japan (AE92 and AE101) came in the Levin GT-Z models.
The 20v Came out of an AE101 Levin GT-Apex (Coupe) & FX-GT (Hatch)(Silvertop motor, putting out 160HP, yes) and the AE111 Levin BZx series (Coupe, w/Blacktop that puts out 165HP). Nothing major Kr0n1k
For your options: FI - Go with the GZE, for N/A, go with the 20v. They both have their plusses and minuses, but i suggest doing a search.

Only because corrections seem to not be so civil sometimes. Toysport also has a pretty detailed tech section. If you're friend is going to go turbo, the main difficulty is the exhaust manifold. There are little to no "off-the-shelf" manifolds for the FWD 4AGE's, so one will most likely have to be fabricated.
Yea the USA gets ripped off in that department. I would love an AE92 3 door. And I know Toysport is overpriced, however, it is still a good resource for tech info and $1,750 for a full ST165 front clip didn't seem all that bad, and at least you know you'll be dealing with a real company. The 20V front clip is $1,250 for the silvertop. I guess its my paranoia, but I'd rather deal with a reputable company with some know how and a true love of Toyotas then some random shop with a few engines sittin' around on eBay.
