AE92 Brake lights staying on....

Opened my garage tonight, and my brake lights were on. Pressed and pressed on the brake pedal, would not shut off. Headlights are completely off, battery is drained enough that it wont start, I have no idea WTF is going on. Anyone else had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

your brake switch right by the brake pedal could have come loose from the housing, check it and make sure it is all the way in and turned to lock, and if it is you may need to get a new brake switch.....

Your brake pedal has a small rubber plug that plugs into the arm of the pedal where it meets the actuator to the brake switch. When your foot is off the brake, it pushes the switch in enough to break the circuit to the lights. It gets hard and brittle over time, and will crack and fall to the floorboard below. It is smaller than a dime, and cost 1.19 at the Toyota dealer.

If you want to check the switch, have somebody watch the brake lights while you engage the actuator/plunger I mentioned with a flat head screwdriver. If you are able to make the lights go off (assuming you have charged your battery) then it is not the switch, its that pesky little buttplug. I never would have figured it out myself if I hadn't found pieces of it on the floor mat.
Hope it's that easy for you too!

Thats exactly right. There is a little rubber plug that fits in the frame. The plastic stopper in the brake light switch touches that and shuts the brake light off. Without that your brake lights will stay on. Unless you disconnect the battery. Go to your local dealer. They are only a couple dollars, and about 2 days to order one.
