Exclamation '01 corolla hep pls. TIA

and so the question is, my gf's '01 corolla S has an electrical issue. the ignition doesn't crank. you turn the key and it makes repetitive "clicking" noises. and it doesnt even turn over. i know it can't be the battery as it was just recently changed a few months back and besides it still powers up the radio and headlights fine.

so what do you guys think just based off this info. the starter? the whole ignition system? i'd figure i'd ask the community before i take it to a money sucking dealership/tech center that'll tell me i need to replace everything.

TIA

If your alternator isn't charging, it could be the battery even though you just changed it. Sometimes a battery is strong enough to run the lights and radio but won't crank. A simple thing to try is to clean your battery terminals.

A bad starter is also a possibility. Some modern cars have computers that won't let the engine run if they sense certain faults, but I suspect your 2001 isn't that clever.

Check the alternator, starter and battery as either one could be the culprit.

thank you all for your kind words and advice.

well... i tried my optima red top from my subby into the corolla and alas still no start. so i'll have to say its safe to assume that i'm going to need a new starter.

so my next question goes... any particular dealer/service station or autoshop in the san jose, california area do you guys highly recommend?

again thanks all for your much needed help and support. TIA!

I am willing to bet it is the "contact points" on your starter. The kit is about $6 for each terminal. one for the positive and one for the negative. Here are some links that will take you to some pics, in case you want to DIY. GOOD LUCK!

Repair your own STARTER

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t424063.html scroll down to the third or fourth post for MANY links!

Here is a place you can get the parts:

I bet the positive side is the culprit. Sometimes the ground side is HARD to find! Good Luck
