Question E10 fuel and AE82 w/ 4A, compatible?

G'day guys.
Got a quick question for you all about fuel compatibility. Were only just getting E10 rolled out in Aus, because our crazy dipstick PM is driving the country backwards, but thats another story.
I'd like to ask all of you with more experience about ethanol blended fuels, how you feel about them and would you put them in something as old as a 1986 4A engine. Are there any problems with the carby drying out or potential cracking of rubber or plastic hoses?

I've checked the forums pretty throughly and there are some responses on ethanol fuels, but none specfic to the 4A, or potential for damage to the engine. Also, it's worth noting that toyota doesn't reccomend it : http://www.toyota.com.au/psa/article...53D711,00.html

Thanks everyone

Cannot speak for Toyota’s. One problem with other older carb engines (Honda) was the floats over time were affected by E10. The alcohol did not mix well with the plastic floats. This caused the them to gradually sink lower and lower in the bowl. Over time the car would be increasing difficult, then impossible to start. The auto manufacture had a new improved float replacement kit available that worked great. The hoses, seals seemed to hold up fine.

Check with a Toyota dealer and ask about the floats, they might be OK with E10.

E10 also dropped MPG. Lower MPG, higher cost. Sounds like a good deal for someone.

I think they should go to 100% ethyl alcohol in the form of Everclear liquor (almost pure ethyl alcohol). This way, drivers could tank up and get tanked at the same time. I am sure it would make politics a whole lot more palatable! (not advocating drinking and driving of course).

Thanks for that repsonse toyomoho,

Lol, yeah it works fine for the brazilians!
In Aus the E10 is about 4 cents a litre cheaper than regular unleaded, and my 7AFE goes just as far on it. I love the stuff!

I'm inclined to belive that ethanol will dry out plastics over time, and cause them to crack.. i'll have a look at the float some time and see what condition its in, then maybe look at sourcing a replacement. I'm pretty sure my girlfriend doesn't want me fooling around with her car too much and I had such big plans for it
