Starter questions.

Hey,

I've got a 1991 Toyota Corolla DX. It used to click and then start but as of this morning, it won't start anymore. I was told it's the contacts on the starter. How do I get to the starter? Do I need to take out the intake, or can I leave it on? Should I take it out from the bottom or from the top?

Thanks a lot.

You'll have to go under the car. Look on the side of the block that faces the passenger compartment. Its near the bottom, below the intake manifold. The starter is a cylinder about 5 inches long and 3 inches in diameter. The The central part of the cylinder is black and the parts near the ends are bare metal. It's held by some very thin and long bolts.

I think your talking about the solenoid being that length, the starter is bigger then 5x3 inches, make sure to disconnect the battery before removing/replacing it!

Thanks for the responses.

I think I phrased my question wrong. I know where the starter is, but it's hard to get to. Does anybody have any tips/etc to make it easier? The bolts are 14mm, right? I tried it from the top and couldn't get it.

Thanks again.

I have bought a tool specifically for Toyota Engines, and have never used it on anything else except beating the crap out of the starter on my friends Holden: 350mm Socket Extension bar.

Allows you to get to the starter from the top - on the opposite side to the intake manifold.. Also allows me to get to the stupid A/C tensioner belt to tighten it.

These things are so incredibly useful on tight engines its not funny...

I did this this winter with my 7AFE and let me tell you it was a BITCH to get out.

I remember I had to use long wrenches I think, like a socket wrench but with the whole clicking device inside the wrench... it's the same concept as a socket wrench but flat. Then once I unscrewed it I somehow got it out through a hole near the passenger wheel where the steering arm goes through. It def. won't come out through the top; you gotta take it out from under the car. Then again, idk cause you have an AE92 and a 4AFE.

Useful links for when you get it out:
