Question CORRECTION: Code 71 Question

'95 1.8 100k miles started with Check Engine light Code 71. Also, slight gas ping from stop with light acceleration. EGR checked ok, modulator tested ok, replaced new vsv still same problem. Also removed EGR and cleaned little bit of carbon from port. Thanks in advance.

There's a thread started a couple of days ago with ALL the codes on it.. I think its either at the bottom of first page or on the second page by now.

I'm curious about the terminology "code 71". The 93 and earlier Corolla's used a blink code and could give a 71. But didn't the later ones switch to codes like "P0402" that are read with a scanner?

Yeh, thats the Difference between (On-Board Diagnostics) OBD-I and OBD-II. OBD-II is on '95+ on NA produced cars and will give the Pxxxx codes. OBD-I is on cars pre 95 and will just blink a two digit fault code such as '71' or '54'.

When i get a chance i will update the OBD-II code thread to include the OBD-I codes for the 4A. For now - I dont have my service manual on me...

if the gas cap isnt tight enough either it sends a signal, but i doubt that could be your problem

Question Gas Cap Signal

I didn't think that the gas cap on the '95 had that engine code capability?
