engine removal

The 88 AWD corolla, AE95R, 4A-FE, 16 valve EFI. Is there an easier way to remove motor from the car, than lifting up ?

Get a saw and cut off the front end. Only way without lifting it up.

Removing the 4AFE with the AT transmission attached (as the Service Manual says to do) is an interesting problem. You can't do it with the engine level since the AT hits the brackets and things on the drivers side. So you have to suspend it so the (USA) drivers side of the engine will hang lower than the passengers side. You may have to raise it slightly to get the passengers side free of its mount, then lower it so it will begin to hang at an angle and then raise it again. I think this is the reason the Service Manual says to remove the center member. I can't actually get the center member removed, but I get it loose enough so it droops down. This allows the drivers side of the engine to drop down.

I don't know whether you could remove the cross member and center member and hoist the engine down to the ground. Looking at the empty engine compartment of my Prizm, it appears that you could.

Undo all the engine mounts.

Put the car on a spit and flip it upsidedown?

well i guess i could be nice and expand on my answer....

the real answer is yes, you could remove the cross member, jack the car up until the bumper is chest height, then drop the engine/tranny together from the bottom....

but, coming from an mr2 rich background (where this is the only way to do it)... while it is an effective way, it's not the easiest way.... in FWD cars where the hood opens up enough and there's sufficient space for it to come upwards, then there's no reason to make it tougher on yourself and go downwards then have to play the "drag/push/pull" game with the heavy combo....

the only cars that i've made the engine/tranny, engine, or tranny go downwards are in mr2's.... so far i've successfully pulled engines upwards in:

90 corolla sr5
93 saturn sl2 (several times... not my car, pos)
93 chevy beretta gtz (not my car, pos)
91 honda crx
91 isuzu impulse
