I want to start getting serious my with 4A-FE motor. It's very responsive already. I have a cold air intake, NGK Plugs, Bosch wires, 2 1/4 Exhaust with a HKS Muffler. What mods should I be looking into now.
My car has a LSD, New Tires/wheels and a new clutch, so my drivetrain is good to go.
Do they make different intake manifolds for these cars, larger throttle bodies, cams?
I don't want to put a header on there just yet, because I'm going to fab up my own turbo system eventually. I already have a t3, bov, wastegate and the piping, just need some money to get it tuned.
How are the heads on these cars? Any aftermarket head swaps worth the money? How about porting the stock head?
I've seen cams for the 4af and 4afe but I don't remember who made them, found them on google one day.
For turbo the 4af and 4afe has better air flow than the 4age, and the later 4afe's were even better for that than the early ones. As for a turbo on it I would talk to flashmn since he has a turbo 4af in his car.
as for are they worth the money? well for N/A the 4af and 4afe engine produce more torque for the hp you make out of them than the 4age does because of the angle on the valves differs from the 4age. So if your going for torque as well as hp then I would say the mods on them are worth the money, because either way you look at it your starting with a DOHC 16 valve 1.6 liter engine. That is saying your just looking at the 4age 16v and 4afe.
First of all decide if you wanna go NA or FI.
Thats the first step you have to take, because alot of the mods you do with NA will not work with FI.

Maybe stock VS stock, but a 4A-GE does have its advantages, it is superior if both are stock.
though the 4A-FE poses a better platform for FI because the shape of the comb. chamber resists knock very well.
Well, my 4A-FE motor is suprisingly quick. I guess it has somewhere around 100 hp and that much torque stock. With my few mods i'm maybe putting that down at the wheels. These cars are fast when paired with a 5 speed. Almost as fast as my camaro.
I was thinking about milling the head for a compression increase and putting a backcut on the valves, but im 90% sure I want to turbo the car, so high compression is out of the question.
4AFEs are between 100-110hp depending on year, definitely quick with a 5spd but it won't help you live your life 10seconds at a time.
True. But my Prizm/Corolla runs 15.9@87 mph, my camaro runs 15.2@89 mph. I would rather give up .7 seconds to reach 90 mph and get 3x the gas mileage and have more fun doing it since I can drive it like I stole it
for now I am thinking of getting another head for the 4af and getting the valve seals done, porting it out, that sort of thing so that oil will stop getting into my cylinders when it sits and I've heard I can use 4age valve springs in it? that would give a little more rpm although will that really help me? lol
Get the newer gen head. Camry valves for it, larger valve seats. Have it ported by someone who knows their stuff. Using 4A-GE springs might work in the 1st gen head, they're close regarding measurements, but afaik they're too long for the 2nd gen head.
Porting alone wont do much, because you're still having an awfully small hole at the end of the runner.
true, well I want to stay with a carb for now since for me to go to EFI means I have to either swap the tank or put an aftermarket fuel pump on which I don't feel like spending the money right now and I have to run all new fuel lines. And yea I was going to take the head to a place fairly close to where I live, guy builds race engines and has done a couple for the guy I worked with, he recommended him.
so as long as I get a first gen, which I would think is in the ae92's and would include the 4af head?
*edit*
what year and engine am I looking for to get the valves from (I would think I should buy them new) and as for the valve seats what do you suggest
