4A-FE Turbo

Time has come for me to turbo

Please bare with me now, i'm new to the world of turbochargers and I'm excited. I'm so used to building american v8s, now is my chance to build a fast 4 cyl that gets 25 mpg.

I'm looking for a turbo exhaust manifold to start with. Making one would be a pain, and im sure there are some out there, what are my opions? I'm looking to run no more than 6lbs of boost to keep my engine happy. I could probably get by with a basic t3 turbo. I also want to run an intercooler setup which isn't that hard, just finding on that fits, and fabbing up some lines.

So my point is this, I know how to make everything bolt up and work physically, but what else do I need to do electronically to make it run? Also, how do I run an oil feed line to the turbo? Just drill a hole in the pan, tap it and run a line?

I looked at the wiring for this car, for Fuel Injection, its very simple and basic, i think I can pull this off. just need some advice and assistance.

My only question is where does the MAP sensor go? Can I just leave everything else alone and simply bolt up the turbo pieces?

Map sensor will stay in the manifold like its supposed to. problem is that it doesnt read boost and the ecu doesnt know how to dictate it.
SUPPOSEDLY, now I've never done this, so I cant vouch for it, BUT some boys _supposedly_ have. you install a checkvalve into the map sensor tubing and a T which you create a controlled leak, now supposedly the map sensor will work with that. Then you use a FMU device to raise the fuel pressure with a ratio to boost. I take no responsibility with this.

you probably wont get 25 MPG with a turbo.

Next, buy two books Street turbocharging and corky bell's maximum boost. Its gonna clear alot of things up and give you knowledge about this.

yes they are. Not exactly to scale, just trying to get an idea. So the only thing I need to do is figure out how to make the ecu understand boost since it can read above 1 bar.

go with standalone ECU, it will undestand ANY boost.

I'm not looking to go that in detail with this setup. I just need to make it work.

No they won't bolt up, you'll need a custom manifold.

Once you get your mani fabbed up, you can get a rising rate FPR, and isolate your MAP sensor with check valves. It's a cheap and crude way of doing it, but it does work.

I believe the OEM ECU will work ok with 4-5psi.. not sure how much that is in bars.

Stock it should deal with a little boost, For a while

A guy over here turbo'd a 5afe (1500cc version of your engine) using the standard ECU, with a 2 bar map sensor from a GTS mr2 and ingectors from a supra (I can't remember the CC rating.) The lower reading from the map sensor was offset by the larger injectors (also had a Rising Rate FPR) which allow about 8psi boost. the limiting factor was that the NA ecu won't retard the timing for boost.

So if i were to try to find an MR2 turbo map sensor, larger injectors and cam gears to retard the timing, I could run 4-5 psi safely?

You dont retard ignition timing by turning the cams around, thats cam timing.

As for where you can buy those parts:
performance shops.

Seriously though, maybe you should buy a few books and study this subject a bit, otherwise you're going down shit-creek very damn fast. Just a suggestion from my point of view.
