ok well im 15 i want a ae86 really bad cuz i love thoes cars alot and i dont make much money how much would i need to save for one cuz i want to make it into a drift car later thanks
Check out the For Sale forum here on TN for a rough estimate for the car. The price varies depending on the condition. You say you want to make it into a "drift car". Then I'd suggest you get one in good condition. If you start saving up now, you'd have the money for sure by the time you get your license. So good luck.

another initial D kidd eh? what we gotta say to him guys? ren? flash? the other guys?
hehe......well, ae8605, my advice for you is to not buy this car as your first car, the snow will p0wn you in MN with the rwd ae86, buy something else, perhaps a fwd toyota and learn from it, then later if you still want the ae86, save some $$$ and get it suit up real nice, trust me, the car will eat up more $$$ than you'd want. For your first car, just buy something reliable and learn from it. You've already said you dont make much money, if i were you, i'd stay away from this car if i was 15 yr old looking for a first car, unless your parents are loaded with $$$$
My advice, stay away from ae86s unless you have a lot of time, money, and patience to invest into them. Even when well maintained, a 20 year old car is bound to have it's problems. I definetly do not recommed for a first car.
the ae92 isn't much better with that. Engine and such are alright. It's the little things that are broken, door handles, locks and such
and for money wise the ae86 has become over priced. Some people sell them for reasonable prices but most want to much money just because it's in initial d. Test drive it before you say you want it. I would suggest maybe going other rwd car, maybe a 240 or miata (although miata's can get expensive too :s), I would say rx7 since you can pick up an 86 - 91 model for a decent price but have fun finding someone who knows what they are doing to repair it and paying for the parts.
as for the 20 year old cars for a first car they are pretty common for younger people since the insurance is nuts, even for something that is 16 or 17 years old your looking at over 4000 a year
fieros stink, I've driven and worked on them. (You may think otherwise if you read this and you own one.)
Good advice is free, it only costs you if you don't take it! Most people would agree that you should buy a different car first. Save your money; It will take a while, but then you can buy exactly what you want, instead of getting a ready-for-the-crusher rust bucket that needs $4000 just to get it roadworthy. Do it right - save your $ and get a cheap car like a fwd corolla or something similar.
MR2 is another option, you can get them with 4age's
as for him buying a fwd toyota not sure if you guys have horror stories but with the ae92 it's pretty mechanically sound even though I beat the shit out of it. Only problem with that is if you push it hard ALL the time you will go through front tires alot and i find the problem with them is you have to have good tires on the rear or it will tend to loose grip all the time. BUt other than that they are easy to work on, fun to drive, parts aren't that hard to find at a wrecker and aren't to over priced at the dealer (which can depend on what you buy). There's a fairly decent aftermarket for them, a few engines to choose from that you can put in it.
Older jettas are also pretty nice outside the fwd toyota, pretty reliable as people like to think they are complex but w/e I don't think they are difficult I think they are simple. The A2 jettas handle well and I think still are the longest running jetta. alot of the parts were the same from 1985 - 1992 so parts are really easy to find. There are different looks for the front end that you can get off the golf and jettas through those years, headlight's a couple rectange types and round ones different grills. Again a couple different engines, 1.6, 1.8, and the vr6 can be put into it. IF your looking for economy there's a diesel and turbo diesel engine you can put in it, but power isn't that great in them. Great trunk space and a decent rear seat with leg room for an adult compared to my ae92 where people can't sit behind me because I am tall. Again has a decent aftermarket. and as with the ae92 a stock one isn't going to be overly expensive
and personally I find learning on an underpowered car will cause you become a better driver faster because you will have to learn to drive better just to keep up. But again that can change depending on the driver, some people can't drive period lol.
When picking a car we can all tell him suggestions but nothing will tell him what he likes more than going out and test driving them. Because as we all know it comes down to each person liking the feel of the car...
My ae92's rust isn't a HUGE deal, alot of it's surface, fenders and doors are going to be replaced but for how much thats gonna cost me it's not a big deal. The worst is the rear quarter because along the wheel well it's rusted a big by the bumper. But the floors and frame are sound
if he takes his time finding one it should turn out ok
Well.. its what lurks beneath the surface.... if you havent had the insides of the body rust proofed with the right stuff, you're gonna have rust in there. Take a peek inside the frame rails and rip out the sound deadening under the carpet.
I have an Ae92, and i LOVE The shape and everything but i wish it was available in the RWD..that would be sweet.
And about initial D, I love that f**** thing, i bought the books and watched the DVD, just like F&F1,2,3, it influences people. ALL AGES.
Drifting is SOOOO FUN to do.. BUT VERY COSTLY when first learning. like some of us have already said, Unless your Parents have ALOT of money, then i would REALLY suggest to you the GTS, or sr5, you can find one in good Condition, and for a fair price. they are FWD, ( I KNOW!!! I DONT LIKE IT EITHER)
but it will be a nice realiable sporty car, and if you REALLY like to drift, try practising it in the winter time with the E-brake, after a while it will teach you how to controll the car. and stay away from the curb. and other harmfull objects then when you jump in to a RWD drift car, it will be just the matter of controllin the gas..
Like DCM said, advice is free, it only cost if you dont take it, gettin into ANY car that you plan on doing more then daily driving will cost you more money. your young, just buy a RELIABLE VEEHICLE that you can do daily driving and still have a little bit of fun ( cough* cough* GTS!! ) and then save up for you REAL toy, that toy that only comes out after work or on the weekend.
and if that TOY happens to be a 1989 Supra Turbo Targa. then YOUR IN LUCK! cause im sellin myne! LOL..
just think about it. and WELCOME TO THA COROLLA FAMILIA!! ( if you buy a corolla )
BTW. this is for the rest of yall, " has the Ae92 model EVER had power windows and locks? )
Im soo sure that i saw a 92 GTS with one..or i could have been drunk.
