I swapped in a 22R from a '87 4X4 into mine and it was great, but others build the 3tc, or swap in a 3s-series, depends on your budget or lack thereof.

22R/RE, 3TC, 3TGTE , any 4AGE, 3SGTE, 1JZGTE , and probably many more.

i totally disagree with this comment. i've seen a 1UZ swapped on a Starlet why not on a Corolla? the 22R is prolly as heavy as a 1JZ or 1UZ if not heavier.

1980corolla.. congrats on the car. did you get a coupe, liftback, sedan or a hatch? post pix bro. the cheapest swap you could do is 3TC that is if you have K-series motor in the car right now. if you have a T series motor, keep it and build it up. you might stumble on a TG head, that'll be an awesome upgrade. in my opinion, don't swap a 4AG. there's no torque on those motors unless you use a GZE w/c will be a big project for you. 3SGE is out of the question since it'll be a bitch to find a RWD conversion.

your best bet... rebuilt 3TC + T3/T4 +MegaSquirt or twincam 1800cc3TG (3TC bottom end + jdm Yamaha 2TG head)

▲▲▲ What I meant was insane power for a tiny car, not "you're stupid if you do this".
micro214, are you sure a 22R weighs the same as as a fully dressed straight 6??? I went with the 22R because of the torque, it pulled pretty hard and was also a good d/d. 1980corolla, if you have the 3TC stick with it, it's not a bad engine.

(also seen a rotary in a starlet, way smaller, more hp.)

sweet... post pix! i'm betting on a 3TC engine. btw, i love the 4 roundlights, not a big fun of the big square lights on those corollas.
