Transmission pan magnets forgotten!!!

Today I dropped the pan on my 3 spd automatic transmission on my 1999 Corolla. Unfortunately, when the job was over and everything was cleaned up, I noticed I had left out the two magnets that belong on the transmission pan.

Will these missing magnets cause any problems? Please let me know if I need to redrop the pan and put them in. Thanks.

The magnets are there to catch any metal shavings that are floating innthe fluid.

You can stick some to the bottom of your oilpan too, or you can get a magentic drain plug..which would be even betetr..metal bits anywhere in the engine/tranny = bad lol

How about just sticking them on the outside...they will still collect the dirt, though not as well. I would place them somewere out of the direct wind or protect them by placing them on the back of the pan....but then again, for the cost of a new gasket and fluid.......

I would put them back in. On the outside I dunno, unless glued with epoxy in time they will fall off. ( potholes, vibrations, etc ) They are in there for a good reason, as mentioned before for the metal shavings. The filter picks up some and the magnets picks up the shavings when parked. The quick fix would be purchasing a magnetic plug which are not cheap compared to the original pulg. If this were me, I would drain the oil again in a clean bucket, drop the pan and re-insert the magnets. The extra hour of doing this will help your tranny in the future.

yea thats what I was thinking, they will fall off. Beside for the most part even though they stick to the pan they end up making their way to the magnet which will hold them in place better. With the magnetic plug? thats saying his transmission pan has a drain plug as most don't..

for what it could cost you in the long run if those metal bits go through your tranny I would say spend the extra on the fluid and another seal and do it.

Thanks for all the responses. I am going to re-drop the pan on Saturday and replace them. My transmission should be fine until then, right? I will probably only put about 120 miles on it by then.

I can't see how 120 miles without magnets will be the end of the world... should be ok
