USA Compatibility

Like a few of the guys here, I have a 93 Prizm and wanted to know how changeable or mix and match friendly are the 4A-FE and 7A-FE motor and trannys ie, if my 4A tranny is going (auto) is it possible to replace it with a 7A tranny and mate them up or is it all 4A?

With a manual it would be no problem, I've never looked at an auto one but common sense would say it will be the same.

i wouldn't put a 3spd auto on a 7afe because it would be retarded, the 4spd auto is the same for both 7afe and 4afe and the 5spd is almost the same 1st gear is a little deeper on the 4afe box then on the 7afe box.

basically any tranny off any A series engine is iterchangeable i just dumped my silver top 20V tranny i had on my 7afe.

The only issues you will find is starter location some are front only some are rear only and some are both also input shaft spline configuration

if your thinking autos some are electronicly controlled so... make sure theres a ECU that will work
