USA oil gone somewhere..

Hello,

I have Corolla 2000 with 104K. Month ago it started to use a lot of oil - I need to add about 4 qt after 3 weeks... There're no any leaks, there's no any smog... I replaced PCV Valve but looks like it didn't help... I was in the shop, they added some dye to oil, but when I returned they didn't find neither oil or dye... What else should I check or replace?

Sincerely

It looks like very common problem for Corollas after 100K.... I know a lot of guys with the same issue and only two of them reported that it was fixed (1 - after PCV Valve was replace; 2 - dealer rebuild the engine that was under warranty...). Do anybody know what to do?

Can you detect any sludge inside the head? What weight oil are you using?

I think the definitive way to diagnose sludge is to remove the valve cover and see if there is any jelling of the oil. Sludge is a controversial topic variously blamed on the oil, Toyota Motor Co or user maintenance. There are discussions of it at corollaland.com.

Unless you actually have emissions data, don't be sure your aren't burning oil. You can burn a lot of oil and not see a visible cloud.

I have update....

I think that my problrm was resolved I change PCV Valve and the oil stands where it should be and in normal level. So, if you have same issue - the first thing that you should do - check you PCV Valve.

PCV=positive crankcase ventilation, what it does is use manifold vaccuum to clean out the dirty air and keep the crankcase from pressurizing itself, because upon presure being there the pressure pushes oil past the piston rings and valve seals creating a problem, its a cheap part (under $10) and is super easy to change!

jon_570 for you id bet $1000 its your oil control rings especially if its a 7A-FE (1.8L) as its a common problem with those engines!
