Speedo stopped working!

The speedometer just stopped working in my 1991 Prizm the other day. The needle wasn't bouncing, didn't have anything happen out of the ordinary, it just went dead. Any ideas on troubleshooting other than simply checking behind the gauges? If the cable needs to be replaced, is this a relatively simple process or am I best served to take it to a mechanic? Thanks!

the cable is a 2 piece cable. the lower piece is very easy (and many people here have had that break, including myself). Check the lower cable first (transmission end). The upper cable would be more difficult.
