99 corolla. Timing belt or a timing chain?

Hi there,

Im asking this question for someone. This person brought his 99 corolla to do the timing belt and was told that it has a timing chain and does not require service. Is this true? If it is, this is pretty impressive.

thank you

chains have been around for years, I believe most domestics run chains. What they usually say about them is.. if they break replace it, as you can't really tell when they'll break.

thank you very much for your reply. Im very impressed that the corolla had the timing chain at this time. Certainly takes the hassle out of worrying about service or the belt snapping on ya.

cheers!

It's definitely a timing chain. Check out the following link to learn more about your 1ZZ-FE engine.

Early 1998 Corollas have 7A-FE engine. But halfway towards the production year they decided to go with 1ZZ-FE. Just check your engine code. There's should be a label on the hood that will either say 7A-FE or 1ZZ-FE.
