Assuming you're referring to the coilovers found on ebay for 50-200 bucks, those are pretty crappy. I'd recommend any of afore mentioned springs before you get crappy coilovers. Most people are partial to Tein S-techs (which drop the car ~2.5") or H-techs (which are closers to 1.5"). Many people have run S-techs on factory shocks for 2+ years with no issues in accelerated shock wear. While I wouldnt recommend Teins (or Eibachs, TRD's, whatever) + stock shocks for track use, it should be fine for every day driving, assuming that you drive within the capabilities of your car.
Now if you're referring to *real* coilovers -- that is, the kind with the strut built in -- that would be the way to go if you were going to be doing track days, autox, etc. Real coilovers have the damper built in so when you adjust the height of the springs, the shock is adjusted to match it. (Crap coilovers are just the springs, so it over-compresses your stock struts in most cases ... since people with crap coilovers are usually stupid ricers who want to slam their car to the ground. This will result in VERY fast wear of your factory dampers) Tein makes a kit thats upwards of 1200 bucks, but is worth every penny. K-sport makes a nice kit that is comparable to Tein and is ~800 bucks on a group buy on another forum.
