depends on of your car is OBD1 or OBD2, one thing that seems common is EGR flow related codes

Check if its OBD1 or 2 if its 1 then jumper the diagnostics connector and watch the engine light if its 2 you will need to use a code reader

This of year Corolla may have a diagnostic system that does not need a special code reader. If so, you can read the code yourself.
