My corolla jerks and bucks at low speeds

Hello everyone:

I have a 1998 corolla, manual transmission, with 200,000 km on it. I've had a problem with it for a long time and never was able to repair it completely. When going at very low speeds, the car starts shuddering and jerking back and forth. The problem is evident when I take my foot off the gas pedal then try to accelerate again. If I do this slowly, I don't notice this problem as much. Then engine also runs smoothly when going at high speeds. I have got the carb checked and had it repaired; the problem seemded to go away after that for a couple of weeks then it started coming slowly. I then purchased a new carb and put it in, and again, it ran nicely for a couple of weeks then the problem came back. Because the carb is a little expensive, I want to make sure that it is the source of the problem before I go ahead and replace it. I would be very thankful for your help.

Does your car really have a carburetor? Or is it the "throttle body" that was replaced?

If you mean by "throttle body" fuel injection system, then no; my car has a carb.

In 1998 all corollas were fuel injected no carb there like said before, it sounds like fuel delivery check the fuel filter and injectors for dirt

He is in Saudi Arabia. His filters are probably full of sand. And since the 98 doesnt have a carb he might mean an 89.

1998 Corolla with a carb!

Though I have had my car's carb repaired and replaced before, you made me doubt if my car realy had a carb. On my way back from work today, I passed by a mechanic and he confirmed that it has a carb! My car is 1998 all right, but I believe the engine might be different over here in Saudi Arabia. My car looks the same as the one below. Any ideas?

Have you cleaned the MAF sensor?

(Assuming you have one.)
