Is replacing outback going to save me gas?

I am currently driving a 2000 subaru outback. I do ALL city driving and short trips to boot...and get approx 20 mpg. I have to fill my car every three days. We started looking at more fuel efficient cars--I did searches on here regarding the fuel efficiency of the corolla but really only found threads on problems people were having.

We are getting an FJ cruiser in a few months so we feel like we can downsize the subaru--however, is it going to be worth it to replace the subaru when we only have 2 yrs left on the loan?

So my big question is:

What is everyone getting for CITY mpg in their Corolla and/or Matrix if you have one?

New corollas get upper 20s-low 30s in town depending on how you drive. The Matrix gets really really good mileage in town and on the highway. Middle 30s to upper 30s city/highway. I have a friend that likes them so much he and his wife bought two of them.

In town, keeping it under 2500 rpms tops, I manage between 28-30 mpg. On the highway I consistently get 35. 2002 automatic transmission.

I have a 05 S and over the summer I had 100% city stop and go driving, and using ethanol (corn) blended gas the whole time and doing smooth starts and stops I get in the lower 30's mostly around 32 but it did go down to 30 with AC on constantly

Well I think that sums it up. If you buy a new corolla you could say you will have a good car with great mileage. Or if you buy an older corolla that you want to fix up you can get good mileage and have a fun car to drive. Either way you will do much better than 20 mpg.

We're replacing our truck with the FJ....we have two dogs, and go to the Boundary Waters on a regular basis along with towing a fourwheeler and fishing boat...That's what the FJ is for.

Thanks for all the information! I saw on some other threads people were only getting 23 -25 and if that were the case it is not worth it to start over on a new loan and get rid of a car I love.

BTW we would be getting an '06--no used Corollas around here!

In the beginning you milage will not be in the 30 tho, just keep that in mind, while your engine is getting broken in and all that good stuff you may get in the mid 20 untill everything works together like a well oiled machine......

Canada

I have an o6 Corolla, 5 speed which I bought Two months ago and I have 12,000 miles on it. You shouldn't have any problems getting 32 to 34 miles per U.S. gallon in the city because I get 42 Miles per Canadian Gallon in the city with my car. Thier fun little cars and I have zero complaints about it. Actually the more I drive it the more I like it..

FJ cruiser--Cool choice. What breed are they? Are you getting cloth or leather seats? You should enjoy this vehicle for a long time. I hate to imagine the gas mileage though.

We're getting it as bare bones as possible...to save money and to buy extras aftermarket. We really hate the rack that comes on it so we're getting an after market one. Also--two labs and leather is a nice thought and bad thought....We have seat covers for hair and water and CLAWS. The no carpet thing in it is what really made the choice final honestly! Gas mileage will be around what the truck got and my husband will really be driving it short trips on a daily basis (work and home = about 3 miles total) but we'll use it for trips with boats and 4 wheeler so with a smaller car it should about even out to what we get now between the two, if not better. His truck gets HORRIBLE gas mileage.

By breed do you mean suv vs car or the fact that it's a toyota...please excuse my ignorance. My forum i usually visit involves dogs...not cars..

Actually the leather isnt bad as long as you keep the seats folded down whenever the dogs are in the vehicle. Its super easy to keep clean. But cloth is much more comfortable when its real hot or cold. Living in Ga, it does get cold but not the extremes that it does up north. However; the summer on the other hand gets stupid hot...Just make sure you use a good synthetic oil. Synthetic oils and fluids will help to increase your gas mileage and of course cause less wear on the engine.
