Question about the Air Box

My friends Corolla has an Airbox that has A Vaccum line coming off it. And what looks like a Triangle shaped sensor. We want to put a cone filter on there and we were wondering if the vaccume line is needed at all. Because the car runs fine without it.

I would use caution against getting rid of / cutting the vacuum line. You might want to cap it off for now. You can always cut it later. Just cap it off and set it aside for now, just to be safe. Do you feel any airflow out of the vacuum line?

well we werent gonna cut it, we were just gonna let it sit there in the open air. There is very little or no air movment through it either. we drove the car for 20 minutes with that hose disconnected and it ran fine if not better.

The vacum line is for the A/C Idle up valve. In theory, there should be no air flowing thru this when the A/C is off. When the AC is on tho, it will need to be connected to something or the engine will remain at low idle and run like a dog while the AC is on...

As for the sensor. These are the Air temp sensor, and can be left in the engine bay if need be, but is best in the line of air.
