valve train and tranny noises on 02

I have an 02 Corolla S. I get a valve train tapping/rattle when the engine is cold. Runs dead quiet when warmed up. Are there common problems with valves/lifters in this engine? Are the clearances easy to adjust?

When under the car while the engine is running, I hear a very audible buzzing noise. Sounds like it is coming from the transmission. This car is a 4 speed auto. Is this the sound of the pump running? Is it normally a noticeable buzz?

Just bought the car a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't leak or consume oil, and is very efficient. I am very happy with it so far, but hope I can get rid of the noises...

As the engine temperature rises, the valve clearance will decrease. This car might use shims to adjust the valve clearance. This requires some special tools and procedures. If you are looking at doing this, get some kind of service manual.

As to the buzzing noise, use a piece of plastic hose as a stethoscope to try to run down the problem area. Check the PS pump if it has one.
