Rear Brakes Squeal...

I got this car from my grandmother, she was the second owner and didnt really drive it much. Its a 1997 DX with 88,000 miles. When I start the car, and put it in Drive, the first time I apply the brakes they squeal. After that, it doesnt do it, and it doesnt do it in reverse either. She had it checked out before she gave it to me and they said its just brake dust. Im thinking I need to get in there and get the brake dust out but I was wondering everyones opinion.

I would remove the drums and clean everything with brake parts cleaner. Check to make sure you have adequate pad thickness. If so, you will probably want to remove the shoes and grease all the contact points between the shoes and the back plate with anti-sieze. Often the squeal you hear is the friction between the two metal parts.

First, does the car have all disc or front disc and rear drum or what? The squeal can be from a bunch of different stuff. Check the pads/shoes and see how much wear is on them. Check the drum and/or rotors and see if they are scratched. Check to see if the calipers are tight. Many times you can have a vibration from the pads, just by the way the pads are seated when they arent engaged. Once you apply the brakes for the first time during the day the pads get hot, and set themselves in place. After the car cools all night there is no friction on them so there may be a little space between the pads and the rotors causing them to vibrate when you first drive the car. Until you apply the brakes and then the noise is gone. Make sure you have the springs in the front pads. The spring looks like a wishbone (sort of) and is used to assist with keeping the pads in place. This is referring to your disc brakes specifically.

few things... since you live in ohio it just be cold brakes. once they heat up no more noise. yea maybe brake dust. just go in clean them and make sure the allined right wheel cylinder is ok if it has drums. thats all you can basically do go to the extreme of geting new pads / shoes. couldnt hurt.

If you have drums, better glance at all those threads about removing stuck brake drums.

Before you write an opinion. It would be of some benefit if you could learn to spell or use some sentence structure.

If the brake shoes are semi-metallic then rust can actually form overnight between the shoes and the drum, particularly if its damp out. You get squeaking the first few stops and after that its okay. My wife's Buick did that for a couple of years until I changed the shoes. It was worst in the fall when the weather was cooling down and there would be dew overnight.

If the dust is brownish when you take the drums off then this is likely the case.
