Troubles filling gas tank - auto fill shuts off too early

I've been having this problem on and off for the past couple of years. Sometimes when I fill my gas tank, the gas will shut off before the tank is full. Sometimes it's so bad I can barely get any gas in. Most of the time, I have no problems at all. No consistent pattern that I can tell.
Any idea what could cause that?
Thanks!

PS... It's a 99 Corolla LE

its not nessesarily the car it depends how sensitive the pump is set, mine does it too sometimes just pull the nozzle out an inch from all the way in and restart it,

the other thing is look up how big your tank is and figure out how much is left when the light comes on that way you will know how much fuel your car should take

BTW welcome to the board!

If you fill your car up on a full moon then you will only get it half full too. When there is a full moon it changes the levels in your gas tank

gas pump problem

It's faulty gas station pumps. Pumps auto shut off when the level of gasoline in the tank goes over the hole on the tip of the pump and blocks the vacuum passage.

Can anyone relate this to your other thread about the check engine light that indicates a loose gas cap?

Actually I think there is. I remember with Chrysler Sebrings, they have a 2nd fuel hose that tends to get kinked and cause this issue, I wonder is Corolla's have a similiar design that could also cause this. I don't remember fully how the system works, but I do remember it's part of the evap system and could cause both the error code (p0440 right?) and the fuel cutoffs from pumps when fueling.

Sorry, early morning for me, and I don't remember this early how the system works. I'm sure somebody will chime in soon and correct me or at least have more details on this.

Someone mentioned to me something about the charcoal canister? I don't even have any idea what that is! I obviously don't know anything about fuel systems...
Keep the feedback coming. You guys are great. Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to look at it and get back on what I find.

It's a canister that traps the fumes from the tank and purges them from time to time back into the engine to be burned. It is located near the front side of the fuel tank on the underside of the vehicle, at least I am pretty sure it is on mine. Overfilling fuel tank can sometimes cause gas to get into the canister and ruin from my understanding. But most of the time it's a stupid leak somewhere in the system. Kinked hoses, loose hoses, loose air filter housing did it on mine. They always say gas cap first, guess since it's the easiest. I just got lucky I found my problem and got rid of it. If you have a book, just follow all the fuel lines related to the system. That's how I found mine. I felt like an idiot when I saw that the other side of my air housing wasn't secured around my filter.

Don't forget to reset the computer by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a minute after trying some fixes. The computer will leave the check engine light on for a long time after an error is fixed unless you clear it.
