VIN Location?

My daughter has a 2000 Totoyta Corolla - her engine was bad and the mechanic said it needed a new motor and said he replaced it with another engine that had 31K Miles. The new motor (if it is new) is also leaking oil and now I am wondering if I've been scammed. Is there a way to tell or match a VIN on a motor with the carbody VIN on the dash. I need to know if it is the same motor or if it is really new. If not a VIN Number, is there another one...

every engine has a serial number to it, as far as I know I dont think you can match it up to the vin, but if you get ahold of toyota I am sure they have on record which engine went into that car and you can compare that..... btw what was so bad with the engine that it had to be replaced?

The serial # of the engine is the last digits of the VIN.
I can't remember off the top of my head how many, but you will see if it's the same or not.

I don't know where it's located on the engine though.
