USA Corolla 98..starts but as if someone has put his feet on gas pedal/with high speed

Hi,
First of all the problem. When I start my corlla 98, it starts as if I have put foot on gas pedal i.e with full acceleration or high threshold or as if you are racing.

Little history ** 2 weeks back :
One fine day my car wont start... when i crank it, I get this sound tak tak tak......I tried about 2 times every time and also tried for atleast 3 days hoping it might start.... by the way during this time I noticed lights and check engine light etc was working fine, so i ruled out the battery problem.AFter 2 weeks showed it to friend , he said its the starter because when we tried cranking, he showed me that tak tak tak sound was coming from near the starter.....but by this time battery was real weak.

What we did :

Went to Autozone with the battery & starter for charging the battery, but the guy said battery is bad and starter is also bad. So we got new battery and new starter( i guess mine is with cold climate). Installed everything i.e new battery and starter...but to remove the starter in first place , we had to remove the radiator, exhaust etc as we couldnt reach the starter.... OK>... after installing , cranked again, and the car did start... BUT THE MAIN PROBLEM.... it starts as if I have put my foot on the gas pedal as if iam giving it high acceleration... NOT SURE WHAT IS CAUSING THIS... any ideas??? all we had touched during removing starter and installing starter was radiator, exhaust.....

If it revs to around 2000 rpms then slowly settles back down to idle, that's normal.

Well, I am stopping the engine after 2 secs as the sound is very scary... for startup , a speed of lets say 120 mph is kind of too much... as I mentioned earlier, it starts with full speed which is really really scary, and very abnormal. I can understand little high idle speed but what iam facing is very very very high speed man.... I have so far tried starting 10 occasions and on all 10 occasions it did the same...

OH BY THE WAY I FORGOT... I had check engine light on before this i.e last month. showed it to autozone and he said its oxygen sensor...Took it to mechanic and he said its Catalytic converter going bad.. dont know if this info will help you guys.......

anyone knows whats going on here

most likely the idle is set too high, try turning it down a little and see if that helps

The 02 or cat should not cause this problem. Did you leave any wires or vacuum hoses disconnected? Check the throttle valve position, it should be closed. Idle is usually controlled by the air idle control valve.

120mph??? how can you tell if the car is NOT moving??? A lot of cars start with high idle, specially in the winter as they need to warm up fast.

I say start it and let it stay that way until the idle goes down on its own.. if it doesn't go down on its own, find the idle adjusting screw and turn the idle down. Usually the idle screw is on the intake manifold area, I'm sure someone with the same generation of Corolla can point to where it is, hopefully with pictures.

120mph its just to tell you that its starting abnormally... i dont know exact speed for sure.... but its definitely strating like a fighter jet... As I have said earlier, I can understand high idle speed, but this is not even close to that... this is as if you have put your foot on pedal / accelerattor and wont let it go...

asked ppl at autozone and he says 1) check the throttle switch( something like that) .. I am not sure where it is and what it does 2) bring back the new starter which might be faulty i.e after starting doesnt stop i.e. it extends but then doesnt stop.. any clues???

If anyone has any suggestions plz advise... any pictures would also help...

thanks in advance...

Sounds like something jamming you throttle open, Pull the intake off and have a good look in there (around the intake manifold and TB), must be extra air getting in there somewhere.

Also check out you throttle cable, its not caught on anything or jammed.

Let us know how you get on.

Some of the exhaust system was removed and replaced. Is the sound definitely a high RPM sound or could it merely be the normal RPM but very loud?
