No new XRS in 2007? Why'd they kill the car? The 2zz-ge is such a great engine (imo). On a lighter note did TRD ever Supercharge it? I know they had a supercharger for the 1zz-fe back in 03-04 (still available). I think you can still use the supercharger on newer 1zz corollas, 2006/07, right? Just curious to peoples opinions which is a more powerful engine the stock 2zz or the supercharged 1zz. Which one makes for a faster Corolla?
You are right. It is a fabulous engine. I have nothing bad to say about it after 2 years. There are many reasons why Toyota did it:
Greddy has a S/C'er for 2ZZ-GE out now.
- Toyota is trying to go greener and 2ZZ-GE (LEV) does not meet the emission standards that Toyota is next aiming for.
- It is still has a Corolla badging, which stands for comfort, reliability and gas mileage. How many people care about a performance-oriented screaming Corolla with an 8400 rpm limit and a very stiff ride?
- XRS is a limited edition very low volume selling car (total of less than 7000 produced) with a 6 speed as the only transmission available. Market for manual transmission cars in NA is less than 10% of the total share. Right now Toyota is discontinuing anything that does not sell well (including Solara, XRunner etc.) in order to meet their sales expectations.
- 2ZZ-GE and 6 speed are not cheap to produce. After killing the Celica, Toyota as such did not make much money out of the XRS so financially it was not feasible.

Darn, too bad. Any opinions on the 1zz-fe supercharger. Does it work on the newer corolla/matrix still? The TRD s/c brings the 1zz up to 164whp I think, that's a bit better than the stock 2zz-ge if I'm not mistaken.
depends on which trim.. 2ZZGE puts out anywhere from 165 to 175hp (according to the new rating system), it's different on the Corolla, Celica and Matrix.
COROLLAS* = OLDSMOBILE in japanese! only for OLD people who drive slow and don't care about sporty cars.
*=2 door 4AG** powered cars are exempt .
I guess that makes my car the equivalent of the Oldsmobile Aurora IMSA cars. My 4 door doesn’t have 4ag, but it has a good claim to being a sports car.
Older SAE ratings had Corolla XRS with 170 HP and Celica GTS at 180 HP. Celica GTS was discontinued before the new SAE standards were implemented (loss of HP in 06). The difference was in design of the muffled airbox/exhaust in Corolla XRS for quietness.
With intake/exhaust XRS dynos sitting on my laptop show close to 170 hp at the wheels SAE (190+ HP at the crank).

Lotus never tested the Elise on the new SAE standards. It is still at 190 HP.
But, going by how much power actually goes to the wheels. The dynos I have seen for Elise, it dynos between 145 - 148 hp at the wheels (XRS dynos at low 150s, GTS dynos at high 150s).
Considering, RWD have around 5 - 6% more drivetrain loss than FWD close, Elise should roughly be at 180 HP under new SAE standards. I have seen a few Elise' in real life and it is just an amazing piece of machine.

like freakinbox said, they are focused on economy, not performance. it's the reason why they stopped the Supra at MK IV, the reason they killed the MR2 Spyder, they are aiming for people with families now, although i dont see why they can't be economic, then also have the more powerful cars still available... i mean, sure if u wanna save on gas go buy an 06 camry, but if you want a fun performance car, you should still be able to get those...

The elise is mid engined, meaning its a tranverse layout, same as a FWD. Losses will be exactaly the same as FWD.
