AE92 It just died

Ok Saturday car runs like a champ. Sunday won't hit a lick. Steps taken so far.

1.) Replaced Plugs
2.) Replaced Plug Wires
3.) Replaced Distributar Cap
4.) Rotater Button looked fine
5.) Replaced Coil
6.) Checked all fuses

Ok on an AE92 I would guess the fuel pump is located in the gas tank. I can't hear anything clicking or running back there. I have tried to recal ever hearing a fuel pump click. I havn't tried changing out any relays yet. Is there a way to check a relay before you fork out $23 on those things. Anyway any feed back would be nice.

Car type is 1989 Toyota Corolla GT-S.

Other than going to the wreckers and picking up another relay from another car and swapping them out, I don't recall ever hearing a way to test them.

Toyota EFI relays are typically reliable and trouble-free over the vehicle's lifetime, its a possibility but I would check the simple things first.

To check if the fuel pump is dead, connect ports B+ and Fp in your check connector aka diagnostic connector. Then switch your key to IGN and you should hear the pump running. You can also pop the hood and listen for the fuel moving in your system.

If your fuel pump is good, check to see if your car is getting spark. Failed ignitors can die suddenly with no forewarning, causing no start.

Good luck

To test relays, connect the coil side of the relay to a battery, if the relay is working you'll hear a mechanical click (The switch side of the relay). Repeat as many times as you wish until you're tired of it clicking..

no click=dead

Battery was good till I got pissed off and ran it dead turning the motor over... lol... Thats good advice on the relays I will try that before I try anything with the fuel pump. those bad boys are a little expensive. Let me get this right though. If I pull the back seat there is an access to the fuel pump without dropping the tank out?

Failed ignitors, do you mean the spark plugs? I have replaced all that. Coil my first thought when the car just died like that.

On my '89 and '90 DX, you would have to drop the tank. The later '91,'92 have the service port under the back seat.

Ok I checked the fuel pump based on what project trueno suggested, it worked great thanks. That rules out the fuel pump. I checked my MAF connections and everything looked good. So now I am back at relays. I pulled the engine relay but I did not take a battery to it to see if it worked. I don't know exactly where to touch the battery to. If its not the relay I'm just gonna have to start back at the coil I guess. What else could cause no spark?

Have you checked for any spark at the plugs or from the coil?

Aw, c-mon, a few thousand volts never hurt anyone (for very long)

Check the connections and wires to the coil from the alt/battery if there is no spark from the coil. How did you check for spark(just out of curiosity)

.

I just disconnected the wire from the cap to coil with pliers and watched for spark while my wife turned the engine over. I also did the same thing at the cap. Do you know a better way I'd sure love to try it. I'm not a mechanic, just a broke fool trying to get his car back running. And yes a few thousand volts stings a little bit!!!!! =)

As long as you were holding it about a qtr inch or so from a bolt or some other ground thats the way I know to do it.

Make sure you are getting 12v to the positive side of the coil hopefully you have a meter.
