Bad deck making speakers worse?

I've got a really old stock tape player in my '93 Rolla. I also have some random aftermarket speakers. I'm not sure what kind, but they're not stock (bought the car with them). Basically, the sound quality is terrible. It's to the point where I'm wishing I had stock speakers. There's MASSIVE amounts of static, and the bass, even when low, is heavily distorted.

Might the old tape player have anything to do with it? Or do the speakers just straight up suck?

Yes, time to get with times dude. Get yourself a nice MP3 deck, they're pretty cheap now a days and most places like Bestbuy include installation in the price, unless you're the picky kind and like the good stuff.

I would suggest a couple of brands.
Mid-end
-Kenwood
-Pioneer

High-end
-Eclipse
-Alpine
-Clarion

As long as you stay away from the $50 walmart specials, I don't think you'll have too much to worry.

Im not an audio guy but i think Ren69 is right with yes. underpowering your speakers can make them sound like s**t. i think it is actually recomended that you slightly over power your speakers. if your gonna do the audio upgrade and dont need a great system $600-$800 should get you some nice speakers a small amp to provide ample power for 4 speakers and a deck installed. since each part can be purchased seperatly you can buy over time and take it easy on your pocket or you can drop it all and have the system that day.

beemic, 600-800 is much more than a nice system, you don't need and amp to have a nice sounding system. just get urself a good head-unit (kenwood or pioneer are good chouces for good quality on a budget) and a good set of speakers (same brands) and u can get a nice syatem. a good head will cost you about 100+ (ideally, go for about 150 for head), and speakers about 100 a pair for decent ones.
