Not downshifting when needed, ,automatic

My 1992 Corolla won't downshift when I press the gas pedal. What mechanism causes the down shift?

well it all depends how much u press the pedal down, and also if the vehicle shifts down that it doesn't go into readline RPM, dunno if the 1992 ECU had that technology but I am sure it it, I am not very familiar with the auto tranny as fas as how they operate, but may be the torque converter????

Try having the fluid and filters replaced.

Have you ever serviced the transmission in any way? Might be something as simple as the fluid level. You need to ask Flash about this one.

I had this problem on my 90 sedan also. There is a cable that runs to the transmission from the throttle cable, they are both attached to the intake thingy (the deal that you turn and make the motor rev from the engine comartment.) Mine was loose and needed to be adjusted a bit . after tightening it down and adjusting it to remove slack it shifted properly for me.

sorry I cant give you more specific details or terminology for the parts that I describe but Im sure that you can figure out the part as I did!
