makes me wish I didn't delete my post about why use an ECU. Thought I was wrong when I saw it was a gen6 lol.
Basically only reason you would need it is because of the lack of a vacume advance, but as flashmn said, 4af distributor has it. If you had a coil pack like the later 4agze then I would say different.
lastly your 4af has an ecu? you sure about that, I was pretty sure my 89 sr5 didn't. No need for it. It wouldn't do anything in our cars, hence the lack of a check engine light.
You dont really need vacuum advance, if you cant use it, its not that big of a deal. I didnt use it with my keihins nor my webers. Though you have to modify the overall advance in the 4A-F distributor, by welding metal into the axle with the weights. Its a time-consuming process, but its really the only way to get it to function without vac. adv.
Plus alot of the aftermarket stand alone ignition systems carry a map sensor system to detect vacuum advance and some can even retard ignition of boost.
yeh i was wondering why i didnt have a check engine light lol..........but if you take off the center console all the way up to the pedals if you look under there ....like behind the cd player ...bolted to the floor is the ecu ....you can unplug it from the drivers side
umm your positive this is not a 4afe you have?
thats why the 4af has a vacume advance, because of the lack of an ecu to control it. 4afe doesn't have that advance.
christ, the 4af even has a mechanical fuel pump :p
