I've seen a couple of people with this setup and they run aftermarket systems like MS as the OEM ECU will not work with carbs.

Why use MS, when you can use a ignition controller from MSD or Crane, etc.
or howbout using the internals from a 4A-F distributor.

Wait... Flashmn, what do you mean about the Using the 4AF Distributor Internals?? or MSD Ignition set up???

This is almost the same question I have been trying to research how to do as well. Except I am using propane instead of Gasoline.

So I too need to find away to make spark happen.

Any website or something I could read about this?

I just want something simple no reason to re-wire my 86 SR5 to do what I am doing. It will be my Commuter not a Drift King Challenger...

Thanks.

Keihins are an ASS to setup. You sure those are 50's, I had similar ones and they were 36mm's, they're measured from the throat side.

I'm meaning, you basically take the 4A-F distributor and stick it onto a 4A-GE, just an idea, havent ever done it.

MSD or some sort of ignition controller can be triggered for example from the crank wheel by putting triggers on it and a hall sensor.

makes me wish I didn't delete my post about why use an ECU. Thought I was wrong when I saw it was a gen6 lol.

Basically only reason you would need it is because of the lack of a vacume advance, but as flashmn said, 4af distributor has it. If you had a coil pack like the later 4agze then I would say different.

lastly your 4af has an ecu? you sure about that, I was pretty sure my 89 sr5 didn't. No need for it. It wouldn't do anything in our cars, hence the lack of a check engine light.

You dont really need vacuum advance, if you cant use it, its not that big of a deal. I didnt use it with my keihins nor my webers. Though you have to modify the overall advance in the 4A-F distributor, by welding metal into the axle with the weights. Its a time-consuming process, but its really the only way to get it to function without vac. adv.

Plus alot of the aftermarket stand alone ignition systems carry a map sensor system to detect vacuum advance and some can even retard ignition of boost.

yeh i was wondering why i didnt have a check engine light lol..........but if you take off the center console all the way up to the pedals if you look under there ....like behind the cd player ...bolted to the floor is the ecu ....you can unplug it from the drivers side

hmm I'll have to take a look, but I don't remember seeing anything behind my radio.

4af also doesn't have a speed or rpm limiter. 4afe does.

Went up to 8000 rpm one time (whoops)

and 200 km/h

There is only one thing I don't get. what do you do with the vacume lines from and to the stock carb when you put in an aftermarket carb.

umm your positive this is not a 4afe you have?
thats why the 4af has a vacume advance, because of the lack of an ecu to control it. 4afe doesn't have that advance.

christ, the 4af even has a mechanical fuel pump :p
