How often to perform a Coolant Flush

Hi,

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla with about 85,000 miles on it. Within the past two years, I had a coolant flush done every year. This year the technician tells me I should get a coolant flush done. I'm wondering if it is normal for a car to have coolant flush done every year. Let me know if anyone has any info on this. Thanks in advance.

Sam

If you are using the green coolant, it should be done every 2yrs/ 24,000 miles.

I go every 30k miles between coolant CHANGES, i.e. drain and refill.

I don't FLUSH the system unless I discover rust or other sediment. I think once a year is overkill, but certainly won't harm anything.

Sam, Once a year is overkill. You are just putting money in the tech's (dealer's) pocket.
You only drive about 15K a year, if you are using the everyday "green" stuff from W-M you can drain and fill every 2 years. If you are using Toyota long-life, you can drain/fill every 5 years.
No need to flush .. just drain & fill.

P.B.

If your car has a lot of miles, I don't think a flush would be a good idea. You could knock crud loose and force it into places that will clog the coolant passage. A simple drain and refill would be much better.

I usually get it done every other year... but I believe if they use the red fluid it's supposed to be good for a lot longer something like 4 years..
