SINCE GUYS ARE ASKING ABOUT 89's

I just put a engine in a carbed 89 AE chassis. Fuel injected engine but seems to have worked fine after A)plugging the injector holes and B) drilling and grinding open a fuel pump hole in the head. Now the bad part. I have no idea how this car ran with the old engine. I thought I had the vacuum lines routed right but am not sure now as I have a stumble right offa idle. Anybody got a pic of proper vacuum hose routing Really just in the corner up around Pwr/str pump everything else should be right as it really kinda fell into place. I know, mark that stuff when taking apart. I did'nt. Some were already undone (previous owner pulled head but left intake in) I'll take off the dist. cap today and clean the advance?? If I can. Otherwise I'm not sure. Thought maybe carb but not sure there either. I changed fuel filter and plugs that's about it. Put dist from original engine. BTW I hope this car irons out Chassis has 280K miles but has been kept up and drives great. Be nice to fix up one that'll make 300K easy. Iv'e thought about keeping this one just to have one that shows 300. Especially since I have about 300 bucks in the car so far and A/C works fine.

oh yeah stumble consists of taking off fine out of clutch, getting to about 1500 and falling on it's face for a sec. It then clears up and scoots fine up to redline(when pressed to). Also seems to be worse after fully warmed as I don't really notice cold. Hard to tell here tho as cars warm so fast.

Also (I know) after just installing an engine in here I don't remember seeing that pin the other feller talking about anywhere. (Although things like that drive me crazy too)

Ok more on the problem then. I took apart dist. today and did'nt fix anything. When cold it also pours smoke out the back (till warm) Making me think again I may have a vacuum line routed wrong and sucking oil into the engine somehow. BUT stumble is still there whether or not oil is burning (if it's even oil, tho I'm pretty sure it is, maybe steam tho? No odor just white smoke till warm) Car dives fine after 1200 or so RPM and getting past the hesitation

I think maybe grinding a fuel pump hole in the head might have something to do with your problem. FLASHMN where are you???

Ok found a vacuum chart to get started. Had some routed wrong. May have cleared up the start-up smoke. Still stumbled. I took off fuel filter(new) and routed around it. Ran fine. Bought new filter. Stumbles back. Hmmm, guess I'll put a gauge on the pump tommorow. BUT after reading some other posts on the 89s I think I should have a O2 sensor. I don't! Guy at parts house said 89 should be on exhaust later models go in exhaust pipe. Is this correct? If so there is no provision for it in mani. (tho I can tell someone has changed it before (diff. gasket and no heat shield) I find a wire that could poss. go to sensor. Now, Could this be the prob.? No 02 sensor? I thought cars just ran in open loop when sensor out? How important to a feedback carb is this? Also anybody know off hand how much pressure I should expect off the fuel pump? This sure seems like a fuel prob. to me. Or maybe a power valve in carb. Like I say I have no idea how well or poorly the old engine ran.

Nah, that worked fine, pump works easily, If it were binding on the arm I'd agree but I made the hole the same size as stock(the carbed engines had the hole already there, thats what the unused threaded bolt holes are from on the later year heads) Now back to what else I find (remember this was a junkyard car and it's real close to coming back to life) My MAP(?) sensor is open (at least I'm pretty sure thats it.) @ hoses coming out are connected right but the single port is open. No idea where it goes as I never saw it connected Anyone? AutoZone has pretty good vacuum diagrams for all the cars (and mentions this as MAP) but tells where the 2 go but not the single line? I can't find any open ports around intake or carb left to connect to.

Ok, Still looking for the spot to hook up the SINGLE port to the devise on the firewall right next to the wiper motor. Not hooked up when I got car and can't find picture or another 89 carbed to see. Am looking around for later model downpipe to get a O2 sensor back in. That or I'll put in a bung. Hope to avoid that and buying a new sens. is out of the question unless I KNOW that's the problem. I have to rule out everything else first as I think O2s are about 75 to 100 bucks. At least they were last time I bought one. I'll check again. NO ONE know where the last vacuum line goes? Not too many carbed engines left to look at.
