I priced one thinking they were expensive, I've always been told cats are like $300. High flow one is $150 around here.

high flow cats and race cats are two differnet things.
I got my high flow cat for 80bucks. Race cats go for 500bucks. You can imagine which one actually is useful. I'm probably gonna whack out the innards from my cat.

How much of a benefit are they? Is it worth the effort for that by itself?

for a stock engine, naah the gains arent that great. For race cars, yeah, but alot of rally cars have the cat right at the end of the exhaust, not at the beginning.
