gauges going bonkers

My son has a 1992 dx corolla and he says every time he starts it the gas and temp gauges go straight to max and stay there. Any suggestions?

sounds like shorted wires, those sensors are resistance based so the guages are just an ohmeter which is calibrated to show some information. if theres NO resistance they will shoot to the top and if theres INFINITE they will shoot to the bottom. well atleast for the fuel guage. the temp guage is the same i think, but i'm not completely sure.

When I swaped motors I had the same problem. Hooking up the ground wire for the gauge solved the problem. You might want to check that out.
