Question Operating Temp on AE86

My temp guage reads 3/4 or near towards HOT.
Is this normal? And when I turn on my heater, the needle is leans closer towards HOT even more
Whats the normal operating temp?

When you turn on your heater, do you get heat? Like a good proper amount of heat? Could be that your piping to your heater core is clogged.

Check things like your rad, your coolant, your thermostat.

Over-heating can also be a result of a blown head-gasket. Check your compression.

Will do!
And yes, the heater blows hot and toasty. I'm assuming that the normal operating temp that the guage supposed to be at is mid way right?

Aight I'm having mad problems.
The car first stalled on its own and shut off on my way to work today. The temperature was fine before it died. Took me awhile to turn it back on but then while I was driving my temperature went BEYOND hot on my way to work today (The needle was buried). There was no boiling of the coolant or steam coming out of the engine and the car still pulled good. Any ideas what it could be? The rad and coolant levels are fine. I have a feeling it could be a busted thermostat but I just want to make sure before I do anything major.

After your done driving is the lower rad hose suspicously cool? If so it is ether the thermostat, water pump or a collapsed hose.

To see if your hose is collapsing let the car idle for a few minuets then hammer the throtle down a few times. My old hoses collapsed during this test. But I also had to replace my rad, rad cap, thermostat, water pump and 2 gaskets.

Aight I'll check that.
BTW, its wierd, but the car cools once I gain speed.
The wind blast is cooling the car. The car slowly overheats if I'm stuck in traffic.

Ya I know. When my car first started to over heat I was in the middle of nowhere. I had to drive my car for 2 hours to the city. The wind will help but it should get fixed sooner than later.

ok I have a general question, if the computer *thinks* that the engine is too hot, would it shut off? Sometimes this happens and it pisses me off. The car would just stall and shut down, I would have to wait for a bit then I could start her up again.

..

if you have alot of miles on that engine, the reason it's stopping could be because it has gotten so hot that the pistons have actually gotten stuck...temporarily. I used to have a car that did this, it had old worn bores with sloppy rings, so instead of permanently seizing it would just get temporarily stuck ...let it cool for a while and away you go again. If you keep doing this you will destroy your engine.

Stop driving the car until it is fixed.

From your description it's probably the radiator.. as speed increases it's effectiveness.

I have a new rad in my ae and the needle sits at 1/3 rd, which is the proper operating termperature according to datalogging.

With the old rad, which looked perfectly fine, the car would only get hot at the track or in stop and go traffic, cruising on the highway it was fine.

Neil

True it could be the rad as well.

The way to check if you have a bad rad is to drag your finger across (you don't need to press hard) the rad. If it collapses as you drag your finget accross it then you need a new rad.
