Yes I know it sounds impossible, but today I put petrol into my lovely new corrolla diesel car.... not surprisingly it stopped running!! I have two questions :
1Is there a system at petrol stations and or corolla where a petrol pump nozzle does not fit into the diesel tank of the car?
2. Any ides how much it will cost to repair the engine?
Many thanks
Mike
I've heard that gas will ruin a diesel engine. (As far as repairs, you would have to take it apart to see what damage has been done). All the lines should be be cleaned out and the filter(s) changed before attempting to start it again.
^and this is coming from something you heard?
I've SEEN a diesel engine run with a half a tank of gas, it wont ruin the engine, it just wont run. Just empty the tank and fuel lines and put diesel in and see what happens.
I know running diesel in a gas engine is suposed to be really bad. My dad did it to our van and we had the tank removed and drained, only way to do it on the newer fords.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since you havent been here long enough to know that I'm a professional mechanic, not some jiffylube grease monkey.
by the way. I am also with flashmn. Since an old trick to clean a gas engine is to use a little bit of diesel. They also say a little bit of gasoline in a tank of diesel will do the same. Long term use can cause damage but I would say as long as your not running it alot with gasoline you should be fine.
I don't think you will have to clean out the lines, I also wouldn't recommend you mess around to much with a diesel engine unless you know what your doing. If your really in a panic take it in and have a mechanic do it for you.

And all this time I thought you were just a stinky baboon.
I always thought that diesel fuel also lubricated the engine as well as powered it??
If you ran gas in it, would you not be missing the lubrication aspect of it? I guess it depends on how long it was run.
Wrong, diesel does not lubricate anything except maybe the feed pump. You're confusing it with a two stroke engine, where there is some oil mixed with the fuel. In two stroke engines, theres no oil sump.
I would think the diesel fuel would at least lube the cylinder walls. A friend of mine who loves diesels says you can run them without harm with a certain max percent of gasoline added. I don't recall the percentage (hmmm... do a search and read up on it ?) . So if the car runs, perhaps it is best just to add more diesel fuel.
