Hey all-
Just picked up a 93 base model 93 Corolla with the 4AFE engine. I'm pretty familar with this engine from my 90 celica ST. Anyways, speedo isn't working in the 'rolla. If it had a tach, I wouldn't care, but this car is for my chick, and she needs to learn to drive a stick. On my celly, there's a speedo gear and cable, and I know its common for the square shaft to wear out on speedos, but I'm seeing from doing some searches here that 'rollas have an electronic speedometer
What do I have to replace, I'm assuming there's *not* a cable to just go buy and replace? Maybe a fuse out?
Sorry if this is a noob question, picking up the car monday and havent had a chance to go over the car in detail yet. I was surprised though that even though it shares the same engine as the celica, how doggy it was in comparison :/ Maybe I should slap this extra 97 7AFE I have in my garage into it rather than the celica
Look down on top of the tranny and see if there is a speedo gear cable. If so it is probably a 2 piece item. Most of the time its the upper cable that will break. The bottom cable can break but its not usually the case. Some of the mid 90's models had an electronic gear that was fitted into the top of the tranny. Take a look and see if its a cable or a wire. Then get an exploded picture from any parts place and you will see how it is connected/wired.
The vehicle speed sensor or the speedometer head is broken. The VSS can be checked with a meter. The VSS from the the dealer or new from autozone is very expensive. Get one from the junkyard for about 15 or 20 dollars.
Would these be attached to a fuse? My speedo is also broken, but kicks up to about 65 at approximately 50 mph. I would assume this is the VSS and not the speedo head, correct?

That same part is about $200 here too. Its not cheap.
Well when we went to pick up the car, my girls mom said "take it to the dealership, I'll pay to have it fixed" so I was like, "OKAY"
Told them: the speedometer doesn't work, but everything else does. I think its the electronic speed sensor, I know it's expensive"
So what do they do?
They tell my girl it's $225 for the part (jives with what you guys said) and $200 for DIAGNOSTICS
This is after I told them what to replace. They had to order the part, we're going in and I'm not paying for sh*t besides the part and one hour of labor, which is generous imo. It's amazing how 'top rated' dealerships try and bend people over. Shoot, I coulda snagged the one outta my 90 Celica ST 5 speed probally , never thought of it (it's in pieces atm)
I called Advanced Auto today and got quoted $108 for the sensor, so you gotta love that 100% mark up at the dealer. I couldn't get any of the useless salvage yards around here to give me a price because they claim they don't have one. For some reason, I find this hard to believe...
You can argue that one with the dealership about the labor charge. Especially since you told them exactly what you wanted done. There was no reason to charge you for diagnostic tests. Did you sign anything agreeing to have this done? If so then theres nothing that you can do about it. If you havent purchased the part yet you can always do it yourself and save some money.....
This is priceless..grand total for the above is like 435. THEN, they say "oh well, the signal is only getting to the instrument cluster, but the speedo is rejecting it. We can replace just the speedometer for $285 plus labor, we wouldnt want to do the whole cluster because that would cost you too much.
Come on!! I told the loser that we'd pick up the car, pay the original rapage of a price, and I'd get a cluster myself, he's insane.
SO...anyone want to sell me a 93 instrument cluster? Doesn't need a tach, but that'd be a bonus. Jesus! This is why I usually refuse to get involved in girlfriends' cars
jy dash for $65 works great, speedometer works now. One thing I noticed..the stealership says they put in part number: 83181-12020 Speedo Sensor..$234.81 right? Well, unless I'm looking at the wrong thing, on top of the tranny (standard) theres the 2 wire plug from the harness that plugs into a metal round screw in part..well..that metal part is HAS NOT been replaced, it is certainly not new. Did I get screwed, or am I looking at the wrong thing?
Looking closer, I *was* looking at the wrong thing..the VSS is further back and down torwards the firewall, I've been looking at the top sensor. Hope this helps anyone replacing this part.
BTW, clicking that link will save you $200 from the dealership price, go by OEM part number, NOT description.
Hard to find the VSS at boneyards because they go out so often. People get them as soon as they come in. Or they're broke also. I've had to put a couple on diff. cars. I can't belive the dealership "diagnostics" did'nt account for knowing the speedo would'nt "accept" it tho. Makes you wonder if the speedo was'nt the problem all along. If I did'nt pay for 'diagnostics" I would say "Well, I asked for that part" but for them to charge for it, then sell a part that did'nt fix it seems suspect. I agree they don't take into account it's hard for some people to pay for "Throwing parts at a problem till something sticks" and then not taking uneeded parts back off. Bright side? Most of us have had the same experience at some time or another. Only mechanic I ever trusted tho went out of business for bieng too honest. I guess he just spent too much unpaid time looking for problems.
