2005 Corolla XRS

Seems like a nice fun car so far. I also own a 05 EVO 8 so this addition was just something thats good on gas, and still fun to drive! My question is, are parts hard to find for this car? What I really want is a cold air intake for now, then maybe later a header and exhaust. So what are the best parts to add power?

Yes, the aftermarket seems to be getting pretty good for 2ZZ. I have basic bolt ons on my XRS like Injen intake (04 Matrix XRS Injen intake), Greddy exhaust. I was able to get into the 14s and trapped 3 mph higher than a stock XRS does after putting I/E and you will dyno close to 170 whp (low 190s at the crank). These two mods are great bang for the buck. 2ZZ responds extremely well to bolt ons since stock intake/exhaust are badly cheaply designed and meant more to muffle the sound and do not cost much either. It will sound a lot more like F1 racing car with a good CAI.

For intakes:
Cosmo (Corolla XRS)
Injen (04 Matrix XRS)
AEM Short Ram and CAI

Exhaust:
Greddy SP2 and Evo2 axlebacks (Corolla XRS)
Borla axleback
Magnaflow full catback

Flywheel:
7.5 lbs Fidanza Celica GTS flywheel

Other really good mods (not as cheap) are light flywheel/clutch, tuning ECU for lift etc.

2005 has a little different intake than the earlier years, ive heard that most intakes will pop CEL's and dont play well with the DBW system (the delays progammed into the pcm become alot more noticable with the shorter free-er intake path or something)

no it's 9th gen Corolla that's censored, not sure why actually, but it's been for a while. Previous beef most likely.

Thanks for the replies. So it sounds like an intake is out of the question from what I have read, and there is only 1 full exhaust system available and the rest are only axle back. Well the main thing I wanted to get was a good intake for the car to open it up a bit. Any other help to find a good intake that won't throw a CEL would be GREAT!

What do you mean out of the question? Did you read me reply?

I am using 04 Matrix XRS Injen Cold Air Intake. It was a straight perfect bolt on without any modifications. You just have to take the bumper off (easy thing to do). Cosmo makes a CAI for Corolla XRS.

What do you mean out of the question? Seems like you did not read carefully what I wrote.

I am using 04 Matrix XRS Injen Cold Air Intake. It was a straight perfect bolt on without any modifications on my 05 Corolla XRS. You just have to take the bumper off (easy thing to do) and is any hour's job. I have had mine for 5 months and never any check engine light and 2ZZ responds extremely well to CAI. If properly installed, you will never face any problems with CEL.

Cosmo makes a CAI for Corolla XRS. There are many short rams available for Corolla XRS (AEM, Fujitsu etc.) as well.

You are thinking of a different car or maybe just making guesses? Corolla XRS was only 05 - 06.

Besides, Corolla and Matrix XRS 2ZZ were NEVER drive by wire. All XRS are cable driven. (Celicas got DBW in 03, All Corolla/Matrix models except XRS got in 05).

Of course I read your reply. I'm just commenting on ALL of the other posts I have seen regarding this topic, and EVERYONE seems to have CEL problems and thats something I don't want to mess with. I'm tired of cars having these little problems pop up just from adding an intake or something simple. If I want to go fast I just drive my other car. But now that I know your intake was for an 04 Matrix XRS maybe I will give it a shot. Is it the 1 piece or 2 piece?

The 04 Matrix XRS is a two piece design while the 03 Matrix XRS one is a 1 piece. That is why the 2 piece works perfectly with Corolla XRS. There are tons of Corolla XRS owners who have used Injen and extremely happy with it.

Besides, even though, Injen is a great company and I highly recommend it, you can choose Cosmo that make one for Corolla XRS and there are a bunch of short rams like Fujitsu, AEM etc. that make short rams for Corolla XRS.

People with CELs are not hooking the electronics up correctly.

The XRS is cable driven not drive by wire.

A cold air intake does wonders to waken up the 2zz, the Injen intake is dyno proven to add almost 15 HP. A new muffler adds another 5HP. This tells you how retrictive the stock system is. You HAVE TO replace your intake and exaust it will feel like a different car, you'll love it.

Don't bother with a "catback" for your XRS, there is only one on the market (magnaflow) the others are all axleback. Besides the XRS comes with 2" diameter piping there is no need to go bigger with a 1.8L four cylinder NA. If you put a 2.5" or bigger piping on you will sound like all the other ricers with turbo sized piping on a NA car.

Grats on the great car. You have a fun car that gets great gas mileage. With my intake and exaust I'm still getting 35mpg on the freeway, 28 around town.

Oh and the greatest new corolla site is www. 9th gen corolla .com, without spaces, they block it out for whatever reason.

Thanks for the new responses! Sounds like the GReddy SP2 (which is dirt cheap anyway) and the Injen intake are what I will go with then. How hard is the intake install? How long does it take? I know the exhaust will only take 10-15 mins.
