Ok, so the 5-0 doesn't like how loud my exhaust is, even though it is at least 15dB quieter than Joe Schmo's Civic with fart can clamped to stock exhaust (which I pointed out to the cop, mine hangs from all stock hangers, while most other kids don't, no ticket for me :P ) but, alas, still too loud. So here is the question, right now, it is just a round canister with 2.5" inlet and 4" outlet (rice tastes good), if I have that muffler cut off my exhaust, and run a bit smaller oval canister with much smaller outlet, will this quiet the exhaust down some? I refuse to get rid of the exhaust, I don't live in communist Russia, and it is much quieter than most people's exhausts already, but I could stand it being a little quieter myself. Oh, and it currently runs a large resonator near the CAT already, so that part is taken care of. Any ideas, suggestions, comments, ridicule welcome.
Well, in general oval mufflers are more quiter than round ones but I am not sure if a smaller oval would be quiter than a little bigger round one. I have a oval 8x14 Magnaflow on my '05 1ZZ Corolla and it sounds AMAZING! Not loud at all, but very deep and smooth. Maybe that would be a good choice??

It is a full cat back, I got the exhaust with plans of a GZE soon. Maybe a resonator and a new muffler are in line. I think the can attracts attention not just for the noise anyways.
ditch the 4inch tip on it, i bet is *gasp* megaphone shaped! chop that and get a outlet matched peice of stainless welded onto there and that will dampen noise alot, angling the outlet downward will quiet it, as said above an additional larger resonator, or just lay off the throttle around town. take it easy and they wont bother you as much.
Oh, I forgot to mention bitter, this was during a traffic stop where I was getting pulled over for going 30 in a 35 (no speedo, the other concurrent project going on, thought I was going to fast)... yea... boredom when you're a cop must mean, pull people over for whatever. I may just sell the exhaust to someone on eBay who won't be bothered by the police (is there such a place?) and design a new one instaed of hacking this one up.
well go find out if it does infact violate the sound laws, if it doesnt then you're good. if it does the fix the problem. iirc illinois is like 60 db at 50 feet at 2000rpm or something like that. they can meaure it at certain places here if you contest the ticket. so just find out where to get it tested at for noise compliance and get a certificate or something to keep with you that its legal.
another good tip, Paint the can high temp flat black, cops seem to be attracted to shiny objects!, unless your riced out they will look around trying to figure out where its comming from.
Also play with the silencers you can get for the "fart cans" I always have a med one in, if i want some noise i go with the big one, if i wanna wake the dead i run it without!
I got a ticket for a "hollywood style muffler" whatever that means! too me that means nice shinny object

Yea, he did have a nice look around because I don't even have my rims on it right now, so it was just the exhaust he saw. High temp flat black, another resonator, and maybe a nice oval stock looking muffler also painted black should fix the bastards, thanks for the help. I love the hollywood muffler quote!
Dynomax makes a nice exhaust too. It sounds smooth at slow or steady speed but has the beefy, throaty noise when you step on it. And its not really expensive either.
