about 3 weeks ago i replace the front main oil seal, timing belt, accorories belts and i bought an oil pan gasket for my nova with the 4a-lc carbed engine. noticed that the car never had an oil pan gasket and was only siliconed. so i noticed when putting it all back that i had a hard time with the bolts with that cork gasket. like it was to thick, but it could have been that i put some silicone and that could be the culprit. anyways i took off the gasket and did the silicone thing again. now i developed a leak on the oil pan, took it off this weekend, cleaned it good and put it back together and waited 24 hours for it to cure. and sure enough it leaked again. any suggestions, maybe cork gasket with no silicone? do they make a rubber gasket?
I think it was either 1985 or 1986 that was the last year for the gasket on the corolla oil pans for the 4a engines at least, I have no idea for anything over that. I know because I went to buy one and toyota doesn't carry them because they they went to just slicone.
i used acetone to clean the surface an scraped the old stuff off as well. the block was spotless, and i thought i had the oil pan itself pretty well clean. i will try to do it again this weekend. what if i used a cork gasket and got some longer bolts with washers? but i did noticed that there are 2 threads that stick out of the block that get nuts instead. how would i take those out?? i used a gray rtv silcone that was gasket ok and oil resistant. would i need to goto toyota for some special stuff?
in the shop we used break cleaner, dries and leaves no resadue. Sprayed it on the rag and whiped. I used a scraper and and a rag to whipe it down. I reused the ould valve cover seal and some gasket maker to fill in the cracks. and presto... no leak
break cleaner huh, will have to give that a try. i hate having a leak. other than the leak im averaging about 38mpg in this car. paid 650, with only 67k on it but it sat around from what the previous owner said. new rad and hoses, front brakes, clutch master cylinder, tires. body isnt too bad for a daily driver work car. anybody know wherei can find replacement parts such as fender panels and so on....
i have checked with advanced auto, napa, and pepboys and they only carry the cork ones. i will check with jc whitney and see what they got. gotta do it quick, i hate leakin all over the place.
I don't know about that model of engine, but it was interesting that you said you had a hard time with the bolts. On the 4afe engine that I've rebuilt, just for the heck of it, I put a crank scraper and the baffle plate from a 4age engine. This adds thickness to the bottom surface of the block. I could barely get stock bolts in a more than a few threads when I tried to attach the oil pan. But most USA hardware stores have selections of metric bolts, so I was able to find longer bolts. There are two threaded studs that take nuts that I did not replace. I'm hoping they will hold.
Another thing to check is whether your oil pan might be slightly bent.
ahhh i hate this leak! so i tried again to replace and redo this gasket. i went to napa and got a gasket maker grey stuff that was supposed to work. so i did this yesterday and waited 24+ hours to let it cure. and sure enough another damn leak! diff spot this time though . im on the verge of taking a hammer to the whole thing.
