headgasket is probably around 20bucks. As for bolts, dunno never replaced them, they arent stretching bolts.
Tightening sequence, from center outward, in three steps:
1: 20Nm
2: 40Nm
3. 60Nm
Welcome to the BHG (blown head gasket) world of pain!!!!! Both of my 4A-FE powered rollas bit the dust because of BHGs, and now I have a MKIII Supra, and we know how that goes....
well I checked the oil cap and no white crap. But it's in the anti freze. It happened to my 90 jetta. Where instead of the anti freze getting into the oil the oil got into the antifreze, which I didn't think would happen with the 4af.
just the head gasket and the head bolts NEED to be changed, things you can change are valve stem seals (since the heads off) water pump, timing belt, cam seal, crank seal, valve cover gasket.

Wrong, the bolts dont need to be replaced, because they arent torque to yield bolts, they dont stretch. Just keep them in the right order and you'll be fine.
unless toyota put them on the 4ag's and not the 4afe's.... they are stretch bolts.... there have been many ae86 & mr2 owners to snap the bolts..... i personally haven't bought new bolts.... i buy new engines
i wouldn't reccommend a $20 head gasket.... it could be a lot of work for someone who isn't used to getting deep into cars.... go with a toyota gasket or an aftermarket (of your choice) 4age gasket... (yes they are the same)... if you want a thinner toyota gasket, get one for a 7afe

yea I figured the 4age and 4af head gaskets would be interchangable since it still has to go through the same passages in the block.
Suposidly my dad says the red on the #1 and 2 plugs is from the anti freze. The other pics are mostly from around the front of the block just under the head. Makes sense to me since the other 2 don't have it.
well.... obviously you don't seem really concerned about this... so i'm gonna assume it still runs...
if you do have a break in the gasket from the combustion chamber to the coolant.... generally you will have a lot of white smoke while running..... this is what happened to me on my old 4afe in the ae92 (before i swapped it)... but it would only smoke every-so often....
a simple test at most shops can be done to see if exhaust gasses are entering the coolant....
but if you have oil in the coolant... i would think that there's no breaks in the combustion chamber (unless the HG went in multiple places)

Correct, you know what the tattletale sign of that is? 4A-GE has the 2nd and 3rd phase of the tightening process in degrees, not in NM. Thats a general key for determining if you have TTY bolts or regular non stretch bolts (applies most of the time, not 100% though)
Anyhow I gotta get some sleep, I got a class to teach in the morning.
